Redact PDF

Cloud Processing (Encrypted)

Redact PDF text at the byte level — matched text is deleted from the content stream with metadata purge, while unmatched text stays vector and searchable. Processing runs on PDFLean's encrypted cloud servers and uses your cloud quota.

Cloud processing: encrypted in transit, results kept for 24 hours then automatically deleted, never used for AI training · ≤ 50 MB per fileThis cloud tool needs a free account · Local tools: free & unlimited, no sign-up

What is it?Redact PDF is a PDFLean security & privacy tool: Byte-level redaction: matched text removed from PDF content stream with metadata purge; unmatched text stays vector and searchable. Not rasterization.

TL;DR: Byte-level redaction: matched text is deleted from the PDF content stream with metadata purge and opaque black marks, while unmatched text stays vector and searchable. Hit positions are located and previewed in your browser first; the true redaction then runs on PDFLean's encrypted cloud servers (free account required, one cloud task per file) on the pikepdf engine, with a residue-verification report. Redaction is irreversible, keep a backup.

This tool removes sensitive content from a PDF so it can be shared safely — matched text is deleted at the content-stream byte level, not just covered with a black box. Processing runs on PDFLean's encrypted cloud servers: it requires a free account, counts one cloud task per file, and the server-side pikepdf engine returns a residue-verification report alongside the redacted PDF. Keyword hit positions are located in your browser (an annotation aid), but the redaction itself is executed server-side. The output is a redacted PDF, irreversible by design. Key limitation: redaction cannot be undone, so keep a backup of the original file.

About this tool

Permanently redact sensitive keywords from PDF files. Keyword matches are located in your browser first — you can preview exactly what will be removed — and the true redaction is executed by our server-side pikepdf engine: matched text runs are removed from the content stream and the output is verified for zero residue. Matched metadata is purged; unmatched text remains vector-searchable. Redaction is irreversible; keep the original. Cloud processing requires a free account and counts against your cloud quota.

5

Review the residue verification result, then download

FAQ

Will my file be uploaded?

Yes. This is a cloud tool: the file travels over an encrypted channel to our pikepdf engine, which performs the redaction. Results are kept for 24 hours (one window for every account), originals are deleted right after processing, and files are never used for AI training.

Why do I see a hit preview in my browser first?

Keyword hits are located and annotated in your browser as a pre-submit preview — the file is not uploaded and no cloud task is consumed yet. Once you click "Redact PDF", the server-side pikepdf engine performs the true redaction and verifies zero residue by re-reading the output.

Does it redact text inside scanned images?

The current version matches the text layer only. For image-only scans, run Local OCR first to generate a searchable text layer, then redact here; image content is left untouched.

Are there any limits?

Redaction is irreversible — keep a backup of the original; cloud processing needs a free account and counts against your cloud quota (free tier: 3 cloud tasks per 24 hours); file size follows the on-page limits; only matched text glyphs are physically deleted, while unmatched text remains vector and searchable.

Is the protection strong enough?

The server-side pikepdf engine deletes matched keywords at the byte level from content streams and metadata, covered by opaque black blocks rather than superficial cosmetic boxes, and asserts zero residue in a verification report before the job counts as done. Transport is encrypted and results are auto-deleted within 24 hours.

Can I process multiple files in bulk?

A single tool page handles one task at a time; for bulk work use the Batch Processing workflow and add this tool as a step to run a whole set at once.

Is the processed file still editable?

Redaction is irreversible: matched text is physically deleted from the content stream and cannot be restored. Unmatched portions remain intact vector text and can still be copied or edited. Please keep a backup of your original file.

How do I redact an SSN from a PDF?

Supplied keyword lists remove every occurrence from the content stream; verify on the saved copy afterward — the full verify-as-you-go sequence is in our guide.
