Linearized PDF (Fast Web View)

이 콘텐츠는 아직 번역되지 않았습니다.

A linearized PDF is one whose internal structure has been rewritten so a reader can display page one immediately, before the rest of the file has arrived. The objects needed for the first page are placed at the front of the file, and later pages stream in over byte-range requests. PDF readers report this as “Fast Web View”. Linearization changes load behavior — it does not change the document’s appearance and does not shrink it.

A 20 MB annual report published on a website. Without linearization, a visitor who clicks the link sees nothing until the whole file has downloaded. Linearized, the same visitor reads page one within a second and the remaining pages arrive while they read. The file’s byte size is the same in both cases; only the order of the bytes differs.
