Convert JPG to AVIF — free, in your browser
Drop your file below. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser — the file never leaves your device, there is no account, no watermark and no size-signup trap.
Supports image/*,.webp,.gif,.bmp,.avif,.svg,.tif,.tiff
This page converts JPEG files to AVIF right in your browser — the file is never uploaded. JPEG is lossy (no transparency); AVIF is lossy or lossless (transparency support). Everything below runs on the same encoder your browser ships with, so the result you download is exactly what this page measured.
Converting never adds quality: if the source is a lossy format, that loss is already baked into the pixels and no converter can recover it. What a conversion can do is stop further loss (choosing a lossless target) or shrink the file further (choosing a more efficient codec). The measured table below shows real sizes and timings for a representative sample so you can decide before spending time.
Measured numbers
We publish first-party measurements only where our automated benchmark environment can guarantee the encoder is real (headless Chromium silently falls AVIF encoding back to PNG, so we refuse to print invented numbers here). The tool above performs the conversion with your own browser's encoder — its result card shows the true size for your file, which beats any sample statistic anyway.
When JPG → AVIF is the right call
- •Maximum savings for modern web pages: AVIF (AV1) typically beats WebP by another 20% at similar visual quality.
- •Your audience is on current browsers — Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Opera encode/decode AVIF; Safari displays it since 16.4.
FAQ
Is AVIF better than WebP?
For still images at matching quality, AV1 typically encodes 15–25% smaller than WebP — see our measured table above. The trade-offs are slower encoding and a younger software ecosystem.
Why did my AVIF encode take longer than WebP?
AV1 search is computationally heavier. In-browser encoding of a photo-size image takes a few seconds — still fully local, nothing uploads.
Which browsers can open AVIF?
Chrome 85+, Edge 121+, Firefox 93+ and Safari 16.4+ display AVIF. For anything older, keep a JPG or WebP fallback alongside.
