PDF Metadata

Definition
Section titled “Definition”PDF metadata is descriptive information kept in the file apart from the pages: title, author, subject, creation and modification dates, the application that wrote the file, and sometimes identifiers from an editing workflow. It never appears on a printed page, which is exactly why it surprises people — the pages can be scrubbed clean while the metadata still names the original author or the template’s origin.
Example
Section titled “Example”A contract exported from a word processor where the document properties were filled in years earlier. Every page shows the company’s name, and the metadata shows the drafting employee’s personal username, the editing app, and the original file’s creation date. Removing the author name from the visible text does not touch any of it.
