Factur-X and ZUGFeRD

Definition
Section titled “Definition”Factur-X (the French name) and ZUGFeRD (the German one) are the same standard: a hybrid invoice where a human-readable PDF and a machine-readable XML invoice are one file. The XML data — seller, buyer, line items, totals, tax — is embedded as an attachment inside a PDF/A-3 document, so a buyer whose accounting software reads the standard can import the invoice without rekeying it, while a person still reads the visible pages.
Example
Section titled “Example”A French supplier issues an invoice to a customer whose purchase system imports Factur-X. The customer’s software opens the file, reads the embedded XML, and posts the invoice with its line items and tax amounts — no manual data entry. Another customer, whose system does not read the standard, opens the same file and reads the invoice on its pages. One file, both readers.
