Merge and Split PDFs

Esta página aún no está disponible en tu idioma.

Merging and splitting are the same act in opposite directions: merging takes several files and makes one, splitting takes one file and makes several. Neither changes a page — every page survives, in the order the job put it — and the whole family is about where the lines go. Merge jobs draw lines between files; split jobs draw lines between pages, or at bookmarks, or at keywords. Every tool in the family runs in your browser with no upload, and this hub is its map. It lives in Tool Guides; the paperwork side of the same jobs is covered by the scenario guides the hub links to.

  • Plain merging combines complete files in an order you choose, and can generate a table of contents for the result. That is merge PDF files.
  • Interleaving is for the two-sided-scan case: two files, one with the fronts and one with the backs, that must be woven back together page by page. That is alternate & mix.
  • Splitting by numbers cuts at page ranges, at a fixed page count, one page per file, or into N equal parts, and packages the outputs as a ZIP archive. That is split a PDF.
  • Splitting by structure cuts where the document itself marks a boundary — at each bookmark or heading with split a PDF by bookmarks, or wherever a keyword or pattern appears with split a PDF by text.
  • Inside one file is the neighboring case that is neither merge nor split: reorder, rotate, and delete pages with rearrange PDF pages.

The rule that keeps all five straight: merging and splitting never touch the order of pages inside an input, and neither one reorganizes a file — that is the page organizer’s job, run first when the source needs it.

GuideWhat it covers
How to Merge PDF FilesThe merge side: which tool for each merge shape, the five steps, cover pages, contents lists, and what merging cannot do
How to Split a PDFThe split side: the four split shapes, the steps, the bundled-download case, and how to verify the outputs
Archive a Year of InvoicesA full scenario that lives on this family: keyword-split a bundled statement, index the parts, and convert them into a ledger
Compress a PDF for EmailThe merge/compress sequence when a packet must clear an attachment cap

A packet cover sheet template is ready to download for the packet-style merges — fill it, merge it in as page one, skip the blank-page step.

For a print-shaped job, the difference between booklet, N-up, and imposition is how the pages get arranged on the sheet — imposition and N-up is the one-paragraph version.

Count your inputs: many files to one is a merge, one file to many is a split, pages inside one file is the organizer. If the output must be one file, merge; if the output must be several files, split; if only the page order is wrong, use the page organizer and skip both. Each guide above walks its own steps in order.

Are merge and split free? Yes. Every tool on this hub runs in your browser, free, with no account and no upload. No file leaves your device.

Do merge and split change the original? No. Both read the source into memory and write new files. The original is untouched and can be re-run with different settings.

Why did my merge come out with all fronts then all backs? That is the two-sided-scan shape, and plain merging is the wrong tool for it. alternate & mix interleaves the two files page by page and rebuilds the original stack.

Why did my keyword split miss a boundary? Usually the marker differs from the pattern, or the page is a scan with no text layer. The split-by-text tool reports where each boundary was found, so the gaps are visible; broaden the pattern or OCR a PDF the file first.

What are the size limits? The browser path is bounded by the tab’s memory, and the sizing rules live on the file limits reference page. Packets far above that ceiling use the cloud large-file entry shown on the tool page.
