Bookmarks (Outline)

Definition
Section titled “Definition”A PDF’s bookmarks — the document outline — are navigation entries stored in the file apart from the pages and displayed in the reader’s sidebar pane. Each bookmark points at a page or a view position, and bookmarks can nest, so a document can carry a chapter-and-section tree. Bookmarks are also machine-readable, which makes them a boundary marker: a tool that cuts at each bookmark can split a document into its own chapters.
Example
Section titled “Example”A 300-page policy manual whose sections are bookmarked. A reader opens the sidebar and jumps to “Section 9: Travel” directly instead of paging through. When the same manual needs to be distributed as one file per section, a split-by-bookmark tool reads the outline and cuts there — no one has to look up which page each section starts on.
