Imposition and N-Up

Definition
Section titled “Definition”Imposition is the arrangement of a document’s pages on a printed sheet before the sheet is folded or cut. N-up is the simplest form — two or four pages scaled onto one sheet of paper to save paper. Booklet imposition goes further: pages are reordered and placed so that folding the printed stack and stapling the spine produces a readable booklet. Poster imposition tiles one oversized page across several sheets to be assembled physically.
Example
Section titled “Example”A 200-page training manual that has to be printed for a workshop. Printed one page per sheet, it consumes 200 sheets printed on one side. Imposed 2-up and duplex, it consumes 50 sheets, and with saddle-stitch ordering the printed stack folds into a booklet whose pages run in the right order.
